Joy Noble-Rollin: The Loughborough Market
spacer

Bio:
Joy Noble-Rollin has been involved with photography for many years. Her work has represented England in international competitions, been used to publicise her native Northumberland, and published in a range of magazines and newspapers. Her photographs have been included in many exhibitions, the most recent being as a member of the local art development group, Artspace. This was at the Identita Inglesi exhibition in Mirano, Venice, in October 2005.

Her particular interest lies in environmental portraiture, photographing people in their everyday activities.

Exhibition: The Loughborough Market
The photographs in this exhibition were taken during 2005 and 2006. The overriding theme is to capture the everyday life of Loughborough market and depict the traders, their customers and the diverse nature of their wares.

Joy conceived the idea of photographing the market when she came to work in this area some ten years ago, and recognised that the market was one of the key events in the weekly calendar that attracted people from a wide cross-section of the community. The tradition, since the market’s inception in the 13th Century, has been handed down through the generations.

She is no newcomer to this type of project as one of her earlier assignments was to record the old Grainger Market for Newcastle.upon.
Tyne City Council, prior to a major refurbishment.

Joy feels strongly about using photography as a tool to record things that change and might otherwise be lost for ever. She says “ I believe it is important that our traditional way of life can be appreciated by future generations, just as now there is an interest in looking at early photographs to see how our ancestors lived”. Retirement now allows her to devote more time to this.

Already the project will have archival benefits as, within the next few months, changes are planned for Loughborough market and some of the subject matter already recorded will disappear.

The exhibition has been made possible by winning awards from AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood, Arts in the Community Award, and The Mayor of Charnwood's Community Events Fund, led by former Mayor Cllr Mike Jones.

If you have any comments on this project or wish to get in touch with Joy she can be contacted via Charnwood-Arts: Catherine Gillam on 01509 269 416 or Terry Allen on 01509 822 558.
