SUBIR BASAK : "Colours Meet Rituals and People"
spacer
..."Light is my inspiration
because it creates the image..."
I am Subir Basak from Kolkata, who does not like to be called a photographer; instead I like the phrase "artist of light and shade" better.
Born in 1968 into a family of hardcore businessmen, I was hell-bent on breaking the mould and building a new means of livelihood for myself. My inspiration was provided by the demigods of photography - Cartier Bresson , Steve McCurry and Raghu Rai to name a few.

I started photography at the age of 12 with an Agfa Click III camera. I learnt the basics of light and shade through the trial and error method and my ardent reading habit. But the real sharpening of my skills was done while I pursued a comprehensive 'Diploma in Advance Photography' course in Kolkata under a renowned documentary photographer. Those were the years of my teens, but as adulthood came upon me I got a job as a photo-journalist on a daily newspaper. This job moulded me and my work for the time to come. My real topic of interest became -and the favorite of many photographers-'people'.

I tried to give a form of reality and truthfulness to the emotions, surroundings, values, traditions and lives of people. My camera clicked...clicked...clicked....

I am a science graduate from Calcutta University and involved in business. Recognition of my work came through publication in many books and journals and through many exhibitions in India and abroad. I am an avid traveller by nature . My other passion is a love for dogs which I rate as highly as my passion for photography. In recent times, I have had a side-profession which earns a major part of my livelihood so that I can easily and smoothly pursue my passion - photography - and support my family and child.

Both God and my critics have always been fair and kind to me, as some of my works have recently been bought by agencies such as National Geographic among many others.

But I am still a learner and will continue learning the tricks and trades of this passion of mine till my last breath.

Last but not least I would sincerely like to thank Charnwood Arts, and those who honour me with an exhibition of my works. Thanks to all of you ladies and gentlemen.

I am married to a Bengali girl who shares my passion and I must not forget to mention that she patiently bears the eccentricities that go with this profession. We have a son, who I hope will take after his father in the years to come. So wish me luck because I am sure to need it!
