Dennis Powdrill:
GEORGE HILL of LOUGHBOROUGH (Wine Merchants)
59 Wards End
Loughborough
George Hill started business in Sileby in 1909 as a Grocer and Provisions Merchant, later moving into premises in Cattle Market Loughborough as a Corn Chandler and Beer Merchant. Eddie Hill joined his father in 1925; it was about this time that a Wine Department was opened. In 1952, George Hill's was to become the first self-service supermarket in the Midlands. Self-service had arrived whilst maintaining the personal service for those customers who wanted it. In 1961, the present premises were opened in Wards End when Andrew the third generation came into the business, having completed his training as a wine merchant. Andrew still runs the business today and manages to survive the heavy competition from the supermarkets.
