SPENCERS BAKERY
154 Loughborough Road
Hathern
Mr Herbert Everard Spencer, the grandfather of the present owners started the bakery business with his youngest son Frederick in an old 'stockinger's' shop on the outskirts of Hathern in 1953. Herbert's two other sons Eric and Reginald joining the family business some years later. Reginald being the only son to have children, Yvonne and Ian. In 1963 on leaving school, Yvonne joined the family business with Ian following in 1968, eventually taking over when the elder members of the family retired in 1992. Yvonne's youngest son joined in 1992. Ian's daughter in 1994, and his youngest son in 2005. Spencer's Bakery supplies bread and cobs to many local villages. However, door to door deliveries finished in 1982 due to the power of the supermarket. The bakery uses approximately three tonnes of flour baking more than 5,000 dozen cobs and rolls a week in addition to loaves and cakes. The day starts early for the Spencer family at three o'clock in the morning. The bakery does not advertise but relies on its reputation for wholesome quality foods.
