GERALD GRUDGINGS & CO. (Tobacconist and Sweet Shop)

The Grudgings Shop in Swan Street finally closed on Christmas Eve 2006. The business started when Gerald's father took over the shop in 1957, previously kept by a lady called Ethel Goadby, who incorporated the idea of selling both sweets and chocolates in what was a tobacconists, most unusual in the 1920s. Gerald, the present owner, continued the business on the death of his father in 1962. More than seventy kinds of traditional sweets kept in jars, in addition to cigarettes, tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff and sundries such as cigarette holders, lighters, clay pipes and even walking sticks were stocked. In fact, you could buy things in Grudgings you could not find in most other shops. Gerald commented on his retirement the life of most local businesses these days was very short.
