Exhibition:

PhotoImage21
has been formed by a number of enthusiasts who would like to expand the opportunities for local photographers. It aims to welcome experienced as well as new photographers to meet together in a creative discussion group. The emphasis is on visual ideas and photography as a means of expressing personal approaches and innovation. The focus is on the photograph, its aesthetic merits and the messages it conveys. Unlike many photographic groups there is no stress on competition or prizes but rather on open and friendly debate and the sharing of views and the encouragement of experiment. PhotoImage21 regards an involvement in making exciting images as much more important than the technical means. It does not discriminate between those who have been involved in photography for years and those who may be starting out.
More images by members of the group can be viewed on the website at www.photoimage21.org

Gerry Broughton

"Most of my working life has been involved in photography, with experience in Theatre, Advertising, Industrial, Commercial, Architectural Photography and the production of Training films.

Over twenty-five years experience in full time photography teaching; at the Leicester College of Art, Leicester Polytechnic and Leicester South Fields College. Eight years as photography course tutor to Loughborough University Summer School. Leader of photography workshops. Regular guest speaker to Photographic Societies in Leicestershire and the midlands.

My personal photographic work has had the benefit of a broad based background and has recently become centred around the Landscape and Urban Landscape, Documentary Coverage, Street Photography and People in the Workplace."

Paul Sutton

"After a long break from photography I now find myself with a new enthusiasm for creating images. One of my main interests is in digital imagery and the diverse effects that can be obtained by combining multiple images together.

I’m still experimenting with styles and genres; equine photography is and always has been a very rewarding subject for me. More recently I have been taking studio portraits, which is a new experience for me, one that I have enjoyed immensely. In the future I hope to increase my knowledge and experience in all fields of photography."

Caroline Norman

"I was born in Preston, raised on the East coast, and relocated to the Midlands in 2000. Photography is a passion, both traditional methods and more recently digital images.

My pictures are based around the concepts of light, detail, and movement. In particular I am inspired by the natural things that are around us; things that are everyday to the naked eye achieve a more profound importance in my work. As well as still life and overseas cityscapes, I am expanding my repertoire to include characters and the intricacies of modern life."

Robin Vallance

"I have lived in Leicester for 28 years, having originated from Essex. I work in Leicester as a social worker.

I first became interested in photography at the age of 15 when I was given a Pentax SV as a Christmas present. I have always enjoyed taking portraits but more recently have discovered an interest in rural and urban landscape.

I joined PhotoImage 21 as a result of my rekindled interest in photography. Some of my work is exhibited in the Ale Loft above the Barley Mow in Granby Street, Leicester."

Tony Jukes

"I count myself as a ‘serious amateur’ photographer, having been taking photographs over a period of some 30 years. Initially I worked with black and white film and it is only recently that I have turned to digital photography and the exciting world of colour. As a member of The Wednesday Group (the precursor to Image 21) I have exhibited at a number of venues in Leicestershire and Warwickshire.

I have always been fascinated by the way that individuals perceive the world around them in such very different ways. We inhabit the same space yet interpret ‘the truth’ according to our own experiences and preconceptions. Walking around Loughborough, I was struck by the feeling of transition - houses and shops boarded up, for sale, left empty. It was this that I sought to capture in the images I am exhibiting."

Bob Hall

"Photography has been a passion for many years - originally trained in shooting and developing Black and White film. However, I returned to University to take a degree in Graphics Communication in the late 90’s where I developed confidence in using digital techniques to create strong visual images using image manipulation software and printing with an ink jet colour printer.

I am a part-time tutor in Digital Photography and Image Manipulation both for private clients and within the WEA.

To see more of my work visit this website HYPERLINK www.photographics2000.co.uk
or the Fingerprints Deli Café, Queens Rd, Leicester."

Gordon Millar

"My photography concentrates on capturing people going about their lives, working, enjoying themselves and simply being themselves in their own surroundings. This is part of a long tradition of European and American photography that uses the camera as a documentary tool.

In these images of Loughborough Fair I hope I have captured something of the festive spirit, the excitement and the surreal transformation that each year changes the town overnight into a brightly lit dream world of frenetic movement."

Tim Alton

"I started photography as a young boy with a plate camera inherited from my father. I then progressed through the usual cameras of the day, developing my films in the kitchen with blackout blinds. Then followed 35mm and holiday colour slides.

The advent of digital cameras saw a real change in my photography, no longer was film a cost so one could be thriftless in what one took, leading to far too many shots in case one was right.

Since joining PhotoImage21, I have learnt a lot about composition from the wealth of advice available. I now look upon photography as another tool in the artists hands…plus the computer afterwards! I look forward to many more days enjoying my hobby."
